Dua for Children's Relief from Worry and Sadness

Children
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5425

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sadness, and I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika min al-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika min al-jubni wal-buhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This profound dua is incredibly versatile. You can recite it for your children during times of stress, anxiety, or sadness. It's also beneficial to make it a regular part of your supplications for them, even when they seem content, to protect them from future difficulties. Teaching children this dua and encouraging them to recite it themselves, or reciting it over them, can be a powerful way to instill reliance on Allah and provide comfort.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning and the plea for Allah's protection. You can raise your hands, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and direct your supplication towards Allah. If reciting for a child, you can gently place your hand on their head or chest while making dua. Teaching the child to say it themselves, even in simplified Arabic or translation if they are very young, is also encouraged, fostering a personal connection with seeking Allah's help.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), offers comprehensive protection. It seeks refuge from emotional distress (worry and sadness), a lack of capability (helplessness and laziness), and character weaknesses (cowardice and stinginess). Furthermore, it asks for protection against overwhelming financial burdens (debt) and oppression by others (subjugation of men). By teaching and reciting this for our children, we are asking Allah to shield them from these afflictions, fostering their well-being and resilience.
