When to Read

These two powerful surahs, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, are a profound shield for our children. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught us to recite them for protection, especially for children. It's Sunnah to recite them after every prayer, before sleeping, and upon waking. You can also recite them and blow gently over your child, or recite them into your hands and wipe them over your child's body, seeking Allah's protection.

How to Read

Recite them with sincerity, focusing on seeking Allah's refuge. Ensure clear pronunciation of the Arabic. You can recite them directly from the Quran or from memory. The act of blowing (or wiping hands after recitation) is a practice established by the Prophet ﷺ to invoke blessings and protection upon the one being treated.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly recommended these two surahs for seeking refuge from all forms of evil, including the evil eye, magic, and general harm. 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that whenever the Prophet ﷺ was ill, he would recite the last three surahs of the Quran (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas) and then blow over himself. When his illness became severe, I used to recite them over him and wipe his hand over himself seeking its blessings.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5016). Their recitation is a direct invocation of Allah's power to protect against unseen evils that can affect health, well-being, and even prosperity.

Source & Authentication

‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fell ill, he would recite over himself the Mu'awwidhat (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas) and when his pain became intense, I used to recite them over him and rub his hands with them hoping for its blessings. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5016) Another narration states: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'O ‘A’ishah, do you know how extensive my Lord’s protection is? Every night, when you go to bed, recite Ayat-al-Kursi and 'Qul 'A'udhu bi Rabbil-Falaq' and 'Qul 'A'udhu bi Rabbin-Nas'. Verily, they will protect you from every kind of evil.' (Tirmidhi, Hasan)
