Dua for Children to Gain Knowledge and Skill in Crafts

Children
QuranAl-Qur'an, Surah Taha 20:114

رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا

My Lord, increase me in knowledge.

Rabbi zidni 'ilma

When to Read

When we pray for our children, we naturally want the best for them in all aspects of life – their faith, their character, and their worldly success. This powerful Quranic supplication is perfect for asking Allah to grant them deep and beneficial **knowledge** that leads to **skill** and excellence in whatever craft or profession they pursue. You can recite this for your children: * Regularly in your daily prayers, especially after Fard (obligatory) prayers or during the last third of the night. * When you see them engaging in learning or developing a talent, silently making this dua for them. * Before they embark on new studies, projects, or skill acquisition. * Whenever you reflect on their future and desire for them to be proficient, productive, and exemplary members of the community.

How to Read

Recite this dua with a sincere heart, understanding its profound meaning: you are asking the All-Knower to grant an increase in knowledge, which is the foundation of true skill and mastery. * Make sure your intention is pure: seeking knowledge that will benefit them, their families, and the wider Muslim community, and enable them to earn a halal livelihood. * You can recite it in its original Arabic form, feeling its weight and meaning, or you can internalize the English translation while making the supplication. * Remember that Allah loves those who ask of Him. Combine this dua with good deeds and striving for excellence yourself, as children often emulate their parents.

Virtues & Benefits

The quest for beneficial knowledge is a noble pursuit in Islam, and this ayah is a direct command from Allah to the Prophet ﷺ to make this very dua. For our children, its benefits are immense: * **Foundation of Skill:** True craftsmanship and artistry are built upon deep knowledge. An artisan understands their materials, tools, processes, and the principles of their craft. By asking for an increase in knowledge, we are praying for the wisdom and understanding that enables mastery. * **Excellence (Ihsan):** Islam encourages us to perform everything with *ihsan* – excellence and perfection. When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah loves that when one of you does a job, he does it with proficiency," (Narrated by At-Tabarani, classed as Hasan), it applies to all tasks, including crafting and skilled labor. Seeking knowledge through this dua is seeking the means to achieve that proficiency. * **Prophetic Examples:** Consider Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him), whom Allah taught the art of making coats of mail. Allah says, **"And We taught him the making of coats of mail for your benefit, to protect you from your [mutual] violence. So will you then be grateful?"** (Al-Anbiya 21:80). This shows that Allah grants specific skills as a blessing. When we make *Rabbi zidni 'ilma*, we ask Allah to bless our children with similar insights and abilities. * **Halal Livelihood:** Mastering a skill allows one to earn a dignified, halal living, which is itself an act of worship. A skilled artisan contributes meaningfully to society. * **Spiritual Growth:** When knowledge is sought with the right intention—to serve Allah, benefit humanity, and be a productive Muslim—it elevates worldly pursuits into acts of spiritual devotion.
