اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْهُ الْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصَاحَةَ اللِّسَانِ
O Allah, teach him wisdom and eloquence of the tongue.
Allahumma 'allimhu al-hikmata wa fasahat al-lisan
When to Read
This dua can be recited for your child at any time. It is particularly beneficial to make this supplication when they are very young, as their speech is developing, or when you notice them struggling with articulation. You can also say it before they enter a situation where clear communication is important, such as starting school or giving a presentation.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, picturing your child speaking clearly and confidently. It is recommended to place your hand on your child's head or shoulder while making the supplication, or to blow gently on them after reciting. You can also incorporate it into your daily prayers (salah) or make it during the times when dua is more readily accepted, like after the obligatory prayers or during the last part of the night.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a direct request to Allah for the gift of eloquence and wisdom, qualities that are invaluable for a person's success in this life and the hereafter. A child who can articulate their thoughts clearly is better equipped to learn, express themselves, understand others, and interact positively within their community. Seeking this directly from Allah is a powerful act of reliance and recognizes that all abilities originate from Him.
Source & Authentication
The narration is that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught his grandson Al-Hasan ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to say: 'Allahumma 'allimhu al-hikmata wa fasahat al-lisan' (O Allah, teach him wisdom and eloquence of the tongue) after the Witr prayer.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 3761). While this hadith mentions Al-Hasan, the principle of teaching and asking for wisdom and eloquence applies to all children.
