Children
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 2387

O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the deeds which will cause me to attain Your love. O Allah, make Your love more beloved to me than myself, my family, and than cold water.

Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka wa hubba man yuhibbuk wal 'amalalladhi yuballighuni hubbak. Allahummaj'al hubbaka ahabba ilayya min nafsi wa ahli wa minal-ma'il-barid.

When to Read

This is a powerful dua that can be recited for your children, or even for yourself, to foster a deep and sincere love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. It's particularly meaningful to make this dua when you are teaching your children about Allah and His deen, or when they are experiencing difficulties that might distract them from their faith. You can also make it a regular part of your supplications after Salah, or before sleeping.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and heartfelt devotion, focusing on the meaning of the words. Imagine the love for Allah as a flowing river, refreshing and essential, just like cold water on a hot day. Make it a habit to say this dua, perhaps teaching your children to say it alongside you. Remember that raising children to love Allah starts with our own example and consistent supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly asks Allah to plant the seed of His love in the heart, which is the very foundation of our faith. Loving Allah leads to obedience, contentment, and a spiritual connection that transcends worldly desires. By asking for the love of those who love Allah, we are seeking righteous companionship and guidance. The request to be guided to actions that earn His love emphasizes that love for Allah is demonstrated through our deeds. Finally, prioritizing Allah's love above all else – even ourselves and our families – is the ultimate sign of true devotion, as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin 'Amr said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever seeks refuge with Allah from Hellfire, Allah will grant him refuge from it. He said it three times. And he said: 'Ask Allah for His grace.' And 'Abdullah bin 'Amr used to say: 'O Allah, I ask You for Your grace.' Then a man said to him: 'O Abu 'Abdur-Rahman, will not the grace of Allah be sufficient for you?' So he became angry and said: 'Do you not know that the grace of Allah is His sustenance which He gives to whomever He wills from His creation?' And he mentioned a narration similar to this from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Ask Allah for His grace.' He said: 'O Allah, I ask You for Your love and the love of those who love You, and the deeds which will cause me to attain Your love. O Allah, make Your love more beloved to me than myself, my family, and than cold water.' Then he said: 'This is something I have asked my Lord for seven times.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2387)
