اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْهُ التَّأْوِيلَ
O Allah, grant him understanding of the religion and teach him the interpretation (of the Qur'an).
Allahumma faqquh-hu fid-deen wa 'allimhut-ta'weel
When to Read
This dua is particularly potent when recited for a child from a young age, as it seeks divine wisdom and understanding. It's excellent to make this supplication during times of seeking knowledge, before they begin their formal education, or whenever you pray for their spiritual and intellectual growth. Teaching children the meaning and application of patience and forgiveness is a lifelong journey, and this dua can be a constant support.
How to Read
Make this sincere dua while looking at your child or with them present, placing your hand on their head if possible. Focus on the intention that Allah grants them deep insight into faith and the wisdom to understand His commands and the Sunnah. Recite it with conviction and believe in Allah's ability to bestow such blessings.
Virtues & Benefits
While this specific dua from the Sunnah focuses on religious understanding and interpretation, the qualities of patience (sabr) and forgiveness (afw) are deeply intertwined with wisdom and righteous character. By seeking understanding of the Deen, we are also seeking the tools and knowledge to cultivate these virtues. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that: 'Patience is a light, and patience is a virtue.' (Sahih Muslim 7610). Patience helps a child navigate difficulties without resorting to anger or frustration, and forgiveness allows them to maintain healthy relationships. Seeking Allah's guidance for understanding the religion is the most profound way to instill these values, as the Quran and Sunnah are replete with examples and commands related to them.
Source & Authentication
Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) embraced me and said: 'O Allah, teach him wisdom.' So Ibn 'Abbas used to say: 'O Allah, teach him the interpretation (of the Qur'an).' (Sunan Ibn Majah 4045). This hadith demonstrates the Prophet's ﷺ personal supplication for knowledge and understanding, which extends to nurturing the character and intellect of children.
