O Allah, make my child grateful, and make him not disobey You, and do not let him prevail against me because of my sins. O Allah, forgive me and my child and my family and the Muslim men and women.
Allahumma'jal waladi shakuran, waj'alhu la ya'sika, wa la yusallituhu 'alayya bidhunubi. Allahumma'ghfir li wa li waladi wa li ahli wa lil muslimina wal muslimat.
When to Read
This dua can be made anytime, but is particularly fitting when your child is young and impressionable, or when you observe a lack of gratitude. You can recite it during your own prayers, or gently make dua for them while they are present, especially after a blessing or a moment of kindness has occurred.
How to Read
This supplication is a heartfelt plea to Allah. Recite it with sincere intention, focusing on the meaning. You can raise your hands as you would in any dua, or make it silently during prayer. It's beautiful to teach children the concept of gratitude and to make dua for them, fostering a habit of reliance on Allah from a young age.
Virtues & Benefits
Instilling gratitude in children is a cornerstone of good character. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized that a grateful person is closer to Allah. This dua seeks Allah's help in cultivating this essential trait, ensuring our children recognize blessings and respond with thankfulness, rather than entitlement. It also includes a plea for protection from disobedience, a wise parent's concern. As stated in the Quran, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you' (Surah Ibrahim 14:7), highlighting the immense rewards of gratitude.

The narration is from the supplication of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) for his daughter Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). He made this dua: 'Allahumma'jal waladi shakuran, waj'alhu la ya'sika, wa la yusallituhu 'alayya bidhunubi. Allahumma'ghfir li wa li waladi wa li ahli wa lil muslimina wal muslimat.' (O Allah, make my child grateful, and make him not disobey You, and do not let him prevail against me because of my sins. O Allah, forgive me and my child and my family and the Muslim men and women.)
