Dua for Children to be Free from Jealousy and Envy

Children
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2706

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, and the change of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that You are displeased with. I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. A'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful dua is a comprehensive plea to Allah for protection against various ills, including those that can lead to envy and dissatisfaction. It's beneficial to recite this regularly for your children, especially during times of transition, when they might be exposed to comparisons, or when you notice any signs of discontent or envy in them. Making it a part of your morning or evening routine, or reciting it specifically before seeking Allah's protection for them, is highly recommended.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and heartfelt conviction, visualizing Allah's protection enveloping your child. Place your hand on your child's head or shoulder while reciting, or blow gently onto them afterwards, invoking Allah's blessings and safeguard. Understand the meaning of each phrase and focus on seeking Allah's refuge from each mentioned ill.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific dua doesn't mention jealousy or envy by name, its comprehensive nature offers protection against traits that often fuel these negative emotions. Seeking refuge from 'cessation of Your blessings' and 'all that You are displeased with' helps foster contentment (qana'ah) and gratitude, which are antidotes to envy. Protection from 'distress and sorrow' also contributes to inner peace, making one less susceptible to coveting what others have. Regularly making such supplications for your children cultivates their reliance on Allah and strengthens their character, helping them develop a healthy perspective.

Source & Authentication

‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to teach them this supplication to make in the event of distress: ‘A’ishah said: "I used to teach this supplication to those of our children who had reached puberty, and Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to teach it to me."
