Children
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 4501

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearing of Your blessings, the changing of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that You are displeased with. I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow. I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness. I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess. I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min al-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika min al-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika min al-jubni wal-buhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful dua can be recited for your children regularly. You can make it part of your daily supplications, especially after Salah or during the times when duas are more likely to be answered. It's beneficial to recite it with sincerity and a focused heart, asking Allah to protect your children from negative traits like jealousy and envy, which can stem from distress, discontent, or a feeling of inadequacy. Make it a habit to instill this practice in your children as they grow older, teaching them to seek Allah's protection from such character flaws.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and contemplation. While the exact wording is attributed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for seeking refuge from various evils, its principles can be applied to protect children from internal struggles like jealousy. When making dua for your children, visualize them as virtuous individuals, free from envy and possessing contentment. You can raise your hands in supplication, facing the Qiblah, and gently say this dua, directing your intention towards your children's well-being and character development. It's also a good practice to teach children to make du'a for themselves, starting with simpler phrases and gradually teaching them more comprehensive supplications like this one as they mature.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua is a shield against many internal and external harms. By seeking refuge in Allah from the 'disappearing of Your blessings' and 'changing of Your protection', we are asking for sustained favor and well-being. Jealousy and envy often arise from discontentment with what one has and coveting what others possess. This dua, by encompassing protection from 'distress and sorrow', 'incapacity and laziness', and other negative states, helps to foster a sense of contentment and inner peace in a child. When a child's heart is filled with gratitude and reliance on Allah, the seeds of jealousy find less fertile ground to grow. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to seek refuge from a wide array of troubles, and by extension, it can be a means of safeguarding our children's hearts from negative traits that mar their character and hinder their spiritual growth.
