اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْهُ التَّأْوِيلَ
O Allah, grant him understanding of the religion and teach him interpretation (of its meanings).
Allahumma faqqihhu fid-deen wa 'allimhut-ta'weel
When to Read
This beautiful dua was made by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for his young cousin, Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). As parents, guardians, or teachers, we can regularly recite this dua for the children under our care, asking Allah to bless them with profound understanding and insight. Make this dua during your personal supplications, especially in sujud (prostration), after prayers, or at any time you raise your hands to Allah, sincerely wishing for your children's spiritual and intellectual growth.
How to Read
Recite this dua with a present heart, deeply reflecting on what you are asking Allah for your child. Focus on the meaning – that you seek not just superficial knowledge for them, but a deep, nuanced understanding of Islam and life's complexities, which naturally leads to empathy and wisdom. It's a prayer for inner vision and the ability to grasp the true essence of things, rather than just their outward appearance.
Virtues & Benefits
When we ask Allah to grant our children 'understanding of the religion' (fiqh fid-deen), we are asking for much more than mere memorization. We are seeking a comprehension that touches their hearts and minds, enabling them to apply Islamic principles with wisdom and compassion. Teaching them 'interpretation' (ta'weel) means they can discern the deeper meanings behind events, understand people's intentions, and grasp the nuances of situations. This fosters: * **Deep Empathy**: A child who understands the essence of our deen will naturally grasp the importance of kindness, justice, and mercy towards others, leading them to feel with those who suffer. * **Broader Perspectives**: The ability to interpret means they can look beyond surface-level issues, consider various viewpoints, and understand the context behind people's actions and beliefs, crucial for navigating a diverse world. * **Sound Judgment**: This understanding equips them with the wisdom to make decisions that are both just and compassionate. * **Strong Character**: Ultimately, a deep understanding of Islam cultivates excellent character (akhlaq), making them righteous, thoughtful, and merciful individuals.
