Dua for Children: Protection from the Temptations of Technology and Social Media

Children
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4997

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from the things I fear. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being taken by storm from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfazni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yamini, wa 'an shimāli, wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi 'azamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent for asking Allah to protect your children from all harm, including the subtle yet pervasive dangers of technology and social media. Recite it regularly, especially after Fajr and Asr prayers, or at any time you feel concerned about your child's exposure to screens and online content. It's also perfect to read when making dua for them before they sleep or before they start using devices.

How to Read

Make this supplication with sincere intention and a firm belief that Allah is the ultimate protector. Face the Qiblah if possible, raise your hands (as the Prophet ﷺ did when making dua), and call upon Allah using His Beautiful Names and Attributes. You can place your hand on your child's head while making the dua or blow gently on them after reciting it, as it is from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ to blow into his hands and recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas, then wipe over his body (Sahih al-Bukhari 5048). The essence of asking for 'Afiyah (well-being) encompasses protection from all forms of harm, visible and invisible.

Virtues & Benefits

Asking Allah for 'Afiyah (well-being and safety) is one of the most comprehensive duas. It covers protection in both worldly and religious matters. By extending this dua to include protection from harms that may arise from technology and social media – such as exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, addiction, or the neglect of religious duties – you are essentially asking Allah to safeguard their hearts, minds, and actions from these specific modern-day trials. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'The best of supplication is 'Afiyah.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 3850 - Hasan).

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not used to omit these supplications when evening came and when morning came: 'O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from the things I fear. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being taken by storm from beneath me.'
