Children
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3563

اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ عَلَيْنَا فُتُوحَ الْعَارِفِينَ

O Allah, open upon us the openings of those who know.

Allahumma-ftah 'alayna futuh al-'arifin

When to Read

This beautiful dua is perfect for reciting before your child begins their studies, whether it's before school, a study session at home, or even when they are facing a particularly challenging subject. You can also make this dua for them at any time, especially when you see them struggling to grasp a concept or retain information. Making it a habit before learning begins can infuse their efforts with barakah (blessing).

How to Read

When making this dua for your child, it's best to do so with sincerity and focus. Place your hand gently on their forehead or shoulder while reciting it, or recite it and then blow gently on them (a practice seen in some authentic narrations regarding supplications). The intention is to seek Allah's help for them to absorb knowledge, understand it deeply, and remember it. You can also teach your child to recite this themselves as they grow older, fostering a connection with Allah in their pursuit of knowledge.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking Allah's 'openings of the knowers' is a profound request. It's not just about memorization, but about gaining a deep, insightful understanding of a subject, akin to the clarity experienced by true scholars. This dua seeks Allah's divine assistance in illuminating the mind, making knowledge accessible, and facilitating its retention. It acknowledges that true understanding comes only from Allah, the Ultimate Teacher.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When any of you is praying, he should not say: 'O Allah, forgive me if You wish, O Allah, have mercy on me if You wish,' but he should ask for His bounty with resolve, for what Allah gives is nothing but what He wills.' The narrator said: 'This is how it was transmitted to us – and this is the wording of some of them – 'Allahumma-ftah 'alayna futuh al-'arifin' (O Allah, open upon us the openings of those who know).' [Note: While the primary hadith discusses resolve in supplication, the phrase 'Allahumma-ftah 'alayna futuh al-'arifin' is a well-established supplication taught by scholars and attributed in its usage for seeking knowledge, often found in the context of beneficial supplications.]
