Children
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3892

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His creation, and from the whispers of devils and from their presence.

Bismillahi, a'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatis-shayateeni wa an yahdhurun.

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited when a child is going to sleep, especially if they are prone to experiencing frightening dreams or nightmares. It's a beautiful way to entrust them to Allah's protection before they enter the state of sleep.

How to Read

This dua can be recited by the parent or guardian over the child. You can gently place your hand on the child's forehead or chest while reciting it. It's also a good practice to teach the child to recite it themselves as they grow older. Ensure clear pronunciation and sincere intention. Doing this with a pure heart, remembering that Allah is the ultimate protector, is key.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua with conviction provides a spiritual shield for the child, seeking Allah's protection from any potential harm, fear, or negative influences that might manifest in their dreams. It instills a sense of security and reliance on Allah from a young age. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to a companion seeking protection for himself and his family, demonstrating its comprehensive nature for seeking refuge.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his companions a prayer for seeking refuge. He said: Recite: 'Bismillahi, a'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatis-shayateeni wa an yahdhurun.' (In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His creation, and from the whispers of devils and from their presence.)
