A Prayer for Children: Cultivating Patience Through Hardship

Children
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3701

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to any of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which You possess, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a remover of my sorrow and a reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadik, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana Rabi'a qalbi, wa nuura sadri, wa jilaa'a huzni, wa dhahaaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful dua is incredibly relevant for children facing any form of difficulty, be it academic pressure, social challenges, illness, or family struggles. Recite it with your children during times of testing, or even regularly as a proactive measure to imbue their hearts with strength and reliance on Allah. It’s also beautiful to recite together when they are feeling down or overwhelmed, seeking Allah's solace and guidance.

How to Read

To make this dua effective for children, involve them as much as possible. Say it together, perhaps holding their hands or placing a hand on their chest. Explain the meaning in simple terms: 'We are asking Allah to make the Quran our guide, to fill our hearts with peace, and to take away our worries, especially when things are tough.' Encourage them to say it themselves, even if they stumble over the pronunciation. The intention and sincerity are key. Making it a habit, perhaps after salah or before bed, can help them internalize its message.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to a companion who was suffering greatly, is a profound way to seek Allah’s help in navigating life’s trials. By asking for the Qur'an to be the 'spring' of their hearts, we are praying for them to find joy, growth, and life in Allah’s words, even amidst dryness and difficulty. It’s a dua for emotional resilience, seeking light for their inner selves, and relief from sadness and worry. It directly connects the child's heart to the divine source of comfort and strength, building a foundation of faith-based coping mechanisms.

Source & Authentication

‘Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ﷺ said, “No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to any of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which You possess, that You make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a remover of my sorrow and a reliever of my anxiety, except that Allah will take away his anxiety and grief, and replace them for him with relief.” He was asked: “O Messenger of Allah, should we learn these words?” He replied: “Yes, it is necessary for everyone who hears them to learn them.” (Musnad Ahmad 3701, classified as Hasan by scholars)
