O Allah, make my children blessed, make them grateful for Your favors, contented with Your decree, believers in Your Sunnah and the Sunnah of Your Prophet, establish them upon the best of Your creation, and protect them from the evil of this world and the Hereafter.
Allahumma ij'al awladi mubarakeen, waj'alhum shakireena li ni'matika, radiyeena bi qada'ika, mu'mineena bi sunnatika wa sunnati nabiyyika, wa aqimhum 'ala khayri khalqika, wa a'idhum min sharri ad-dunya wal-akhirah.
When to Read
This is a beautiful du'a a parent can make for their children at any time. It's particularly potent during the times when du'as are more readily accepted, such as after obligatory prayers, during the last third of the night, or when breaking one's fast. You can make it specifically for your children when they are facing difficulties, feeling ungrateful, or when you observe them comparing themselves to others. It's also a good habit to make this du'a a regular part of your daily supplications.
How to Read
Make this du'a with sincerity and focus. Imagine your children embodying these qualities of gratitude and contentment. You can say it aloud or silently. Ensure you have 'wudu' (ablution) if possible, and face the Qiblah. Raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ taught us. Most importantly, believe that Allah has the power to grant your request. You can also teach parts of this du'a to older children so they can make it for themselves.
Virtues & Benefits
Cultivating gratitude and contentment in children is a profound act of parenting that yields immense rewards. Grateful children are less prone to envy and dissatisfaction. They appreciate what they have, leading to greater peace of mind and happiness. Contentment, known as 'qana'ah' in Arabic, is a key trait that helps one remain steadfast and serene, regardless of worldly circumstances. The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said: 'Be content with what you have, and you will be the richest of people.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 4212, graded Sahih by Al-Albani). By making this du'a, you are asking Allah to instill these essential Islamic values, which are vital for their spiritual and emotional well-being in this life and the next. It also fulfills the obligation of a parent to pray for their children's righteousness.
