Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2709

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sukhitik.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encompasses seeking refuge from the loss of blessings, the alteration of well-being, and sudden afflictions. By seeking refuge in Allah from these, we acknowledge our complete dependence on Him and trust in His divine plan. It helps to alleviate anxiety by focusing on Allah's protection rather than dwelling on potential misfortunes. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua as a means to guard ourselves against various forms of harm and displeasure from our Lord, fostering a sense of peace and security in our hearts.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah using these words in the morning and evening: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwata wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfadni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi 'adhimatika an ughtala min tahti.' (O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my private matters and secure me from distress. O Allah, protect me from before me, and from behind me, and from my right, and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being taken away from beneath me).' Another version mentioned in Sahih Muslim states: Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to supplicate in these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sukhitik.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You.) — Sahih Muslim 2709
