Wudu to Quench the Fire of Anger

Anger
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3892

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the whispers of devils and from their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatis-shayateeni wa an yahdurun.

When to Read

This supplication is particularly potent when you feel anger rising within you. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that anger is a burning ember that Satan ignites. Performing wudu, with the intention of seeking Allah’s help to cool this inner fire, can be a powerful antidote. Recite it as you begin your wudu or even before you start, as a shield against the temptation to act out in anger.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence of mind as you prepare for or commence your wudu. Understand that you are actively seeking Allah’s protection from the destructive nature of anger and the instigation of Shaytan. Imagine the cool water of wudu not just cleansing your physical impurities, but also metaphorically extinguishing the heat of anger from your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

Anger is a dangerous emotion that can lead to regretful words and actions, straining relationships and distancing us from Allah. The Prophet ﷺ told us, 'Indeed, anger is from Shaytan, and Shaytan is from the Jinn. Verily, water extinguishes fire; so if one of you becomes angry, let him perform wudu.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4784, graded Hasan). This hadith directly links wudu to combating anger. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words, as taught in the supplication above, we are asking for His divine intervention to protect us from His displeasure and the harmful consequences of anger, both from ourselves and the evil influences around us.
