Dua When a Parent is Angry with Their Child

Anger
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 3020

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan.

A'udhu billahi minash shaitanir rajeem

When to Read

This powerful seeking of refuge is for anyone feeling overcome by anger, especially a parent struggling to control their temper with their child. When you feel that surge of frustration, that tightening in your chest, and the urge to lash out, this is your first line of defense. Say it as soon as you recognize the anger rising.

How to Read

Recite this seeking of refuge with sincerity and mindfulness. Understand that anger often stems from Shaytan's whispers. By consciously turning to Allah, you are asking for His protection from the negative influence that exacerbates anger and clouds judgment. Take a moment to breathe deeply after reciting it.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that this simple statement is a shield against Shaytan's instigation. Anger is a fire, and Shaytan delights in fanning its flames. Seeking Allah's refuge is the most effective way to extinguish that fire before it causes harm to ourselves, our children, and our relationships. It helps in regaining composure and preventing regrettable actions or words.

Source & Authentication

Sulayman ibn Surd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ and two men were reviling each other. One of the two faced Allah’s Messenger ﷺ, and his face became red with anger. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘I know a word, if he were to say it, it would remove from him what he is experiencing. Seek refuge with Allah from Satan the accursed.’ They said: ‘And is it that you say: ‘A’udhu billahi minash-Shaitan-ir-rajeem’?’ And they listened to him and they said: ‘Do you hear what the Prophet ﷺ is saying?’
