Dua to Suppress Anger When Witnessing Disobedience to Parents

Anger
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1551

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my sperm. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and from the change of Your protection, and from the sudden vengeance of Your punishment, and from all Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i wa min sharri basari wa min sharri lisani wa min sharri qalbi wa min sharri maniyyi. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matika wa tahawwuli 'afiyatika wa fuja'ati niqmatika wa jami'i sakhxFFFFik.

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant when you witness a situation where a child is being disobedient or disrespectful to their parents. Seeing such a scene can easily stir up anger and frustration within us. Reciting this dua before or as you feel that anger rising can help you seek Allah's protection from the negative impulses that might arise, allowing you to react with patience and wisdom instead of succumbing to anger.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of seeking Allah's refuge. It's best recited in Arabic, but if you're still learning, focus on understanding the translation. Keep your hands raised slightly as if making dua, and feel the earnestness of your plea to Allah. It's a personal supplication, so saying it quietly to yourself is appropriate.

Virtues & Benefits

Anger can cloud judgment and lead to actions we later regret. By seeking refuge in Allah from the 'evil of our hearing, sight, tongue, heart, and sperm' (referring to our faculties and desires), we are asking Allah to guard us from the internal and external triggers of sin and wrongdoing that anger can unleash. Specifically in the context of parental disobedience, this dua helps us to control our reactions, preventing us from speaking harshly, acting impulsively, or harboring ill feelings. It promotes inner peace and a more constructive response, which aligns with the Islamic emphasis on patience (sabr) and good conduct.

Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) instructed me to recite the following words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i wa min sharri basari wa min sharri lisani wa min sharri qalbi wa min sharri maniyyi. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matika wa tahawwuli 'afiyatika wa fuja'ati niqmatika wa jami'i sakhxFFFFik.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my sperm. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and from the change of Your protection, and from the sudden vengeance of Your punishment, and from all Your displeasure.) - Reported by Abu Dawud, Al-Nasa'i, and Al-Tirmidhi, who said it is a good and authentic hadith.
