Dua to Replace Anger with Gentleness

Anger
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3233

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. If You decree a trial for Your creation, take me to Yourself without subjecting me to it. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfir li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amal yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart. Visualize Allah's mercy and guidance as you ask Him to help you perform good deeds, avoid sins, and develop love for the needy and for Him. Reflect on the meaning of each phrase and ask Allah to grant you these qualities. Making dua with conviction is key.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua encompasses several vital aspects of a believer's life. It asks Allah for the ability to perform good, a constant reminder to stay away from what displeases Him, and a heart that feels for the less fortunate. Crucially, it seeks Allah's forgiveness and mercy, and protection from trials. By asking for His love and the love of those who love Him, it encourages us to align our hearts with what is truly beloved to Allah, which naturally leads to a gentler disposition, as love and anger often stem from the same core.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina. (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness).' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3233 - This is a related dua; the primary dua provided is the one that better fits the *replacement* of anger aspect, while this one focuses on broader spiritual well-being. The initial dua provided directly addresses the desire for love of good deeds and Allah, which inherently cultivates gentleness. The scholars often group related supplications. For the specific dua that addresses the *replacement* of anger with gentleness, the following related hadith provides context). Another relevant hadith that speaks to the heart of controlling anger is: Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'The strong is not the one who overcomes others by wrestling, but the strong is the one who controls himself when he is angry.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5261, Sahih Muslim 2609). This dua helps in achieving that self-control by asking for love of deeds that bring one closer to Allah, which naturally redirects one's energy away from destructive anger.
