Dua for Transforming Anger into Mercy for a Wrongdoer

Anger
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 1707

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to try Your creation, take me to Yourself without being subjected to that trial. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and deeds which will lead me to Your love. O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, my family, and than cold water. O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wal 'amalalladhi yuballighuni hubbak. Allahumma ij'al hubbaka ahabba ilayya min nafsi, wa ahli, wa minal ma'il barid. Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua, while not directly about anger, encapsulates the essence of seeking Allah's help to cultivate love for Him and His way, which is the antidote to anger. Recite it when you feel the stirrings of anger, or at any time to strengthen your connection with Allah and purify your heart. It's particularly useful before or after an interaction where anger might arise, as it focuses on developing a disposition of love and submission.

How to Read

This supplication is profound and asks for a deep spiritual transformation. When you recite it, try to do so with sincerity and a heartfelt intention. Understand the meaning of each phrase and reflect on what you are asking Allah for. Imagine your heart being filled with the love of Allah, replacing negative emotions like anger with a higher purpose. It can be recited at any time, but making it a regular practice, perhaps after salah or in the quiet hours of the night, will yield greater results.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to a companion, is a powerful tool for spiritual growth. By asking for the love of Allah, the love of those who love Him, and the love of deeds that bring us closer to Him, we redirect our focus from worldly grievances to our ultimate purpose. Cultivating this love naturally softens the heart, making it more inclined towards mercy, forgiveness, and patience, which are the opposites of anger and resentment towards those who wrong us. It helps in transforming negative emotions into positive actions and a state of contentment.

A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the deeds of the people are presented to me every day, the good and the evil.' He said: 'Do you consider them so?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then you will be presented with them, the good and the evil.' So he said: 'Except for what I am able to do.' He said: 'Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took his hand and said: "O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, and make him content."' The man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I ask You for the love of You, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love. As for the love of You, then it is dearer to me than myself, my family, and than cold water.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Allah, make him steadfast.' Then the man said: 'O Allah, I ask You for the love of You, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love, and I ask You that my love for You be dearer to me than myself, and my family, and than cold water, and that I may see the face of Your grace. I ask You for the enjoyment of Your vision, and the yearning for Your meeting, without any harm or hardship.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'O Allah, make him steadfast.' He said: 'O Allah, I ask You for the love of You, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love, and I ask You that my love for You be dearer to me than myself, and my family, and than cold water, and the enjoyment of Your vision, and the yearning for Your meeting, without any harm or hardship, or any ease or comfort.' He said: 'O Allah, make him steadfast.' The man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what do I say?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I ask You for the love of You, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love. O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, and my family, and than cold water.' The man said: 'O Allah, make me love You with all my heart, and make me love those who love You, and make me love the deeds that bring me closer to Your love.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed, that is a man who is seeking your benefit and you are seeking his benefit.' And he said: 'O Allah, grant me contentment with what You have decreed, and bring me ease after hardship, and grant me righteous deeds and a noble end, and give me the enjoyment of Your vision. And I ask You for the enjoyment of Your vision, and the yearning for Your meeting, without any harm or hardship.' So he said: 'O Allah, grant me steadfastness.' So the man said: 'O Allah, I ask You for the love of You, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love. O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, and my family, and than cold water.' And he said: 'O Allah, enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor.
