Dua for the Strength to Forgive

Anger
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 7

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This is a beautiful dua to recite in the morning after Fajr prayer. While it's a general supplication for a good day, asking Allah for beneficial knowledge helps us understand our deen better, good provision allows us to meet our needs without compromising our principles, and acceptable deeds bring us closer to Him. This inner strength and focus on pleasing Allah can be a powerful antidote to lingering anger and resentment. When you feel overwhelmed by someone's actions, take a moment, even if it's just a few minutes, to turn to this dua. It shifts your focus from the hurt to seeking Allah's help in growing in a positive way, which is essential for finding the strength to forgive.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a hopeful heart. Begin by acknowledging Allah's greatness. Raise your hands as you would in supplication, focusing on each request: knowledge that benefits you in this life and the hereafter, provision that is pure and lawful, and actions that are accepted by Allah. Imagine the peace and clarity that comes from seeking these three fundamental aspects of a righteous life. The act of turning to Allah for help, rather than dwelling on the offense, is the first step towards healing and forgiveness.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, encompasses seeking the best of this world and the next. By asking for beneficial knowledge, we are empowered to understand situations better, including the importance of forgiveness in Islam, which purifies the heart and earns immense reward. Seeking good provision helps free us from excessive worldly concerns that can fuel negative emotions. Most importantly, asking for acceptable deeds reminds us of our ultimate purpose and the value of pleasing Allah, which often puts personal grievances into perspective. The Prophet ﷺ said: "No one will be punished for the sake of Islam who has a quarter of a heart full of faith." (Tirmidhi). While this hadith isn't directly about this dua, it highlights the immense value of faith, and seeking beneficial knowledge and acceptable deeds directly strengthens that faith, making it easier to embody Islamic virtues like forgiveness.

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The prayer that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) most frequently uttered was: 'O Allah, O Turner of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have believed in what you brought, and we have followed the guidance. Is it for fear of our hearts changing?' He said: 'No heart is there but is between two fingers of the Merciful, and He turns it whichever way He wishes.' So I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with us that we do not love our brethren?' He said: 'Perhaps you have become accustomed to your fathers.' Then he said: 'When the prayer of the servant is the prayer of the morning, 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, and good provision, and deeds that are accepted,' then it is as if he has not departed from the sitting."
