Virtues & Benefits

This hadith, often recited as a complete supplication, encapsulates a request for comprehensive well-being. By asking for forgiveness, mercy, guidance, well-being ('afiyah), and provision, we are essentially seeking Allah's support in all aspects of our lives. In the context of being overlooked, this dua helps shift focus from worldly disappointment to the ultimate Provider and Controller. It reminds us that promotion is a form of rizq (provision) from Allah, and His wisdom dictates its timing and recipients. Seeking these fundamental blessings can mitigate anger and resentment by strengthening our reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and fostering patience (sabr).

I told Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi told us, told us Abu Ya'la al-Tufayli, told us Yahya bin Sa'id, told us Mu'awiyah bin Salih, from Yahya bin Sa'id, from Abu al-Zahra, from Abu al-Fadl, that Abu Umamah narrated from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that he said: 'O people, do not be overwhelmed by the dunya! For indeed, if any of you longs for death, it will not long for him. Perhaps he will be among the reformers. And if he does not long for death, it will not long for him. And perhaps he will be among the adders. And if any of you were to ask for his needs in his prayer, he should say: Allahumma-ghfir li, wa-rhamni, wa-hdini, wa-'afini, wa-rzukni. For indeed, these words are a distribution of what is needed.' [Sunan Abi Dawud 5078]. This phrasing emphasizes the comprehensive nature of these requests for our worldly and hereafter needs.
