Dua for Suppressing Anger When Islamic Practices are Mocked

Anger
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the evil suggestions of devils, and from their being present.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdurun.

When to Read

Recite this dua whenever you feel the heat of anger rising, especially when your faith or Islamic practices are being belittled or mocked. It’s a powerful shield against an emotional outburst that could lead to regrettable words or actions.

How to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Utter it sincerely, focusing on the meaning and the plea for Allah's protection. You can say it silently to yourself or in a low voice, especially in the heat of the moment when you need immediate solace and strength.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound protection against both Allah's displeasure and the harmful influences of creation, including the whispers of Shaytan that often fuel anger. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words, you are grounding yourself in His ultimate power and seeking His intervention to control your temper and overcome the provocation. It is a manifestation of relying on Allah to manage internal struggles when external factors are designed to agitate you.

Source & Authentication

Hisham bin 'Urwah narrated from his father, from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the words of refuge: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdurun.' He said: 'They are words of refuge for Ibrahim (peace be upon him).' (Sahih Muslim 2708). Note: While the hadith states this was a refuge for Prophet Ibrahim (AS), its teaching to us by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) makes it universally applicable for Muslims seeking refuge from evil and Allah's displeasure, including the anger that arises from mockery.
