Dua for Suppressing Anger When Intentions are Misinterpreted

Anger
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 2019

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of Satan and his worship (or association).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri nafsi wa min shar-rish-shaytani wa shirkih

When to Read

Recite this dua when you feel the heat of anger rising, especially when your good intentions have been misunderstood and people are casting aspersions on you. It's a powerful shield against letting resentment or uncharitable thoughts take root.

How to Read

This is a supplication that can be made at any time, but it is particularly potent when spoken with sincerity from the heart in the moments leading up to or during an outburst of anger. Take a moment, perhaps move to a quiet place, and consciously ask Allah for protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encapsulates seeking refuge from three major sources of spiritual and emotional turmoil: the innate weaknesses of our own self ('nafs'), the external whisperings and provocations of Satan, and the subtle (or overt) ways Satan can lead us to associate partners with Allah or engage in actions that displease Him. By invoking this, we ask Allah to protect us from being overwhelmed by anger stemming from misunderstanding, which can cloud judgment and lead to sinful speech or actions.

Source & Authentication

The narration states: 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ > **Translation:** 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of Satan and his worship (or association).' > > He (peace be upon him) would say it in the morning and evening.
