Dua for Suppressing Anger When Hard Work is Undermined

Anger
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1554

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from leucoderma, madness, leprosy, and all evil diseases.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal barasi wal junooni wal judhami wa sayyi'il asqami.

When to Read

This dua is beneficial when you feel the sting of injustice, especially when your efforts have been dismissed or sabotaged. Recite it when you feel anger rising, perhaps after a disagreement at work, or when a project you poured your heart into is unfairly criticized or taken apart. It’s about seeking refuge from the internal turmoil that anger can cause, protecting your own well-being and your actions from being dictated by negative emotions.

How to Read

This is a profound supplication that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would regularly make. It is recommended to recite it in the morning and evening, as part of your daily remembrance of Allah. When you face a situation that triggers anger due to your hard work being undermined, pause, take a moment to breathe, and make this dua with sincerity, focusing on the meanings of seeking protection from internal harms. It’s not just about the words, but the earnest seeking of Allah’s shield against destructive impulses and thoughts.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua addresses seeking protection from various internal and external evils, including those that manifest through our senses and heart. When your hard work is undermined, anger can brew. By seeking refuge in Allah from the evil of your hearing (what you hear that angers you), sight (what you see that distresses you), tongue (what you might say in anger), heart (negative thoughts and feelings), and semen (a metaphor for the source of progeny and thus overall well-being and lineage), you are essentially asking Allah to guard your entire being from the destructive consequences of frustration and injustice. It helps to calm the heart and mind, preventing rash actions or hurtful words, and ultimately preserving your faith and character.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge in Allah with these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal barasi wal junooni wal judhami wa sayyi'il asqami.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from leucoderma, madness, leprosy, and all evil diseases.) Reported by Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi, and Al-Nasa'i. Al-Tirmidhi said it is Hasan Gharib.
