Dua for Suppressing Anger When Asked to Do Something Impermissible

Anger
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the alteration of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawaali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'aafiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jamee'i sakhadik.

When to Read

This dua is perfect for moments when you feel a surge of anger, especially when someone is pressuring you to do something wrong or impermissible. Imagine a situation where a friend or colleague asks you to lie, participate in gossip, or engage in any act that goes against Islamic principles. Instead of reacting with immediate anger, take a moment, perhaps discreetly or after the interaction, and recite this powerful supplication. It's a proactive shield against the emotional turmoil and the potential consequences of losing control.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a genuine feeling of reliance on Allah (SWT). Focus on the meaning of seeking refuge from losing Allah's favor, from His punishment, and from incurring His wrath. It can be recited with your hands raised, as taught in the Sunnah for certain supplications, or even silently when the situation requires discretion. The key is the heartfelt connection to Allah, acknowledging His power and our need for His protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive plea for protection against the loss of divine favor and the infliction of divine punishment. By seeking refuge from the 'alteration of Your protection' and 'suddenness of Your vengeance,' we are asking Allah to maintain His blessings and safety upon us, preventing unexpected trials. It helps us channel anger into seeking Allah's help, thereby preserving our faith and our relationships. Suppressing anger through such means, especially when faced with sin, is a sign of strong faith and a characteristic of the patient and wise believer, as Allah praises those who 'suppress anger and forgive people' (Quran 3:134).

It was narrated from Thawban that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When a man says: 'La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la shareeka lah, La ilaha illallah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamd, La ilaha illallah, wala hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.' He would say: 'If the people of the earth or the people of the heavens were to be pleased with this, it would not be pleased with anything else.' And they were narrated from the Prophet (ﷺ) that he said: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawaali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'aafiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jamee'i sakhadik.'
