Dua for Suppressing Anger at the Ingratitude of Loved Ones

Anger
Hasan HadithSunan Abu Dawood 1564

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي، وَأَذْهِبْ غَيْظَ قَلْبِي، وَأَجِرْنِي مِنْ مُضِلاَّتِ الْفِتَنِ

O Allah, forgive me my sin, remove the anger from my heart, and save me from misleading trials.

Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi, wa adh-hib ghayẓa qalbi, wa ajirni min muḍillatil-fitani.

When to Read

Recite this dua when you feel anger rising within you, especially when the actions or words of loved ones – perhaps their ingratitude or lack of appreciation – trigger that frustration. It's a powerful supplication to seek Allah's help in controlling your temper before it leads to regrettable speech or actions. Carry it with you in your heart as a constant reminder to turn to your Creator in moments of emotional difficulty.

How to Read

Begin with the intention of seeking Allah's help to control your anger and forgive those who may have wronged you. Recite the dua with sincerity and focus, contemplating the meaning of each phrase. Try to say it in a quiet place if possible, or at least take a moment to collect yourself before reciting. If anger is already overwhelming, try to move to a different, calmer environment before making the dua. The key is a sincere heart seeking Allah's assistance.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive plea for spiritual and emotional well-being. It asks for forgiveness for sins, which is crucial for all aspects of our lives. More specifically, it directly addresses the heart's turmoil by asking Allah to remove anger ('ghayẓa qalbi'). This addresses the root of the issue, seeking divine intervention to calm the inner storm. Furthermore, seeking refuge from misleading trials ('muḍillatil-fitani') acknowledges that unchecked anger can lead us down paths of sin and conflict. By reciting this, we are not just seeking immediate relief but also protection from the long-term consequences of uncontrolled emotions, aligning with the Quranic emphasis on patience and forgiveness (e.g., Al-Imran 3:134: 'And those who suppress anger and forgive others – and Allah loves the doers of good.')

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'A strong man is not the one who wrestles, but the strong man is the one who controls himself when he is angry.' Another narration mentions the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying: 'A person who is overcome by anger is not strong, but rather a strong person is one who overcomes his anger when he is angry.' The narrator Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked me: 'When you become angry, what do you do?' I said: 'I sit down.' He said: 'This is good.' I said: 'Then I become afraid of the sky.' He said: 'This is better than the first.' I said: 'Then I become silent.' He said: 'This is better than that.' He then taught me this dua: 'Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi, wa adh-hib ghayẓa qalbi, wa ajirni min muḍillatil-fitani.' (O Allah, forgive me my sin, remove the anger from my heart, and save me from misleading trials.)'
