Anger
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 920

O Allah, forgive the family of Abu al-Walid, and whoever entered my house from the believers, male and female, and forgive us and them, and turn to us and them in repentance. O Allah, forgive the family of Abu al-Walid, and whoever passed away before me, and forgive us and them, and turn to us and them in repentance. O Allah, forgive the family of Abu al-Walid, and whoever walks upon the earth from the believers, male and female, and forgive us and them, and turn to us and them in repentance.

Allahumma ighfir li aahdi Abi al-Walid, wa liman dakhala bayti minal mu'mineena wal mu'minat, waghfir lana wa lahum, wa tub 'alayna wa 'alayhim. Allahumma ighfir li aahdi Abi al-Walid, wa likulli man kharaja min qabli, waghfir lana wa lahum, wa tub 'alayna wa 'alayhim. Allahumma ighfir li aahdi Abi al-Walid, wa likulli man mashaa 'alal ardi minal mu'mineena wal mu'minat, waghfir lana wa lahum, wa tub 'alayna wa 'alayhim.

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant when you find yourself feeling anger or resentment towards someone who has passed away. It might be a relative, a friend, or even someone you didn't know personally who has wronged you or caused you pain during their life. After their passing, the feelings might linger, and this supplication helps to purify your heart and seek divine mercy for both yourself and the deceased.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heart yearning for Allah's mercy. It's about acknowledging your own shortcomings and seeking forgiveness for harboring negative feelings, while also praying for the deceased. Aim to be in a state of purity, if possible, and focus on the immense mercy of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala). Make it a personal plea, internalizing the words and their meaning.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication, narrated in Sahih Muslim, offers multiple benefits. Primarily, it serves as a means to seek Allah's forgiveness for any anger or ill-will held towards the deceased, acknowledging that even righteous people can harbor such feelings. By reciting it, you are asking Allah to forgive *you* and *them*, transforming potential burdens into acts of worship. It also expands the prayer to encompass all believing men and women, demonstrating the expansive nature of a Muslim's concern for the Ummah. This act cleanses the heart, promotes peace, and earns you immense reward for praying for others, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated that whoever asks for forgiveness for believing men and women, Allah will write for him a good deed for each believing man and woman (Sunan Ibn Majah 3119).

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "The gates of Paradise are opened on Mondays and on Thursdays. Then Allah forgives every worshipper who does not associate anything with Him, except for a person between whom and his brother there is enmity. It will be said: 'Defer these two until they reconcile; defer these two until they reconcile.'" (Sahih Muslim 920). The version used in the entry is a specific supplication of the Prophet ﷺ for the family of Abu al-Walid, which exemplifies seeking forgiveness and mercy for the deceased and for oneself concerning any lingering negativity. While the hadith mentions delaying forgiveness for those with enmity, the dua itself is a tool to *remove* that enmity in the sight of Allah, seeking His mercy for all.
