Dua for Cooling Down When Anger Arises from a Bad Dream

Anger
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the whisperings of devils, and from their being present.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayatini wa an yahdurun.

When to Read

Recite this dua immediately upon waking up from a bad dream, especially if it leaves you feeling agitated, fearful, or angry. It's a direct shield against the lingering effects of nightmares and the Shaytan's attempts to sow discord in your heart and mind.

How to Read

When you wake from a distressing dream, before speaking to anyone or getting out of bed, make wudu if possible. Then, face the direction you slept in, spit lightly to your left three times (without saliva), and recite this powerful dua. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this method as a way to repel the Shaytan's influence after a bad dream.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua acts as a potent spiritual defense. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words, you are essentially invoking His protection against the negative emotions stirred by the dream and the potential instigation of the Shaytan. It helps to calm the heart, dispel fear and anger, and restore a state of peace and remembrance of Allah, allowing you to start your day protected.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "When one of you sees a dream that he likes, it is from Allah, so let him praise Allah and narrate it to others. But if he sees something he dislikes, then it is from the Shaytan, so let him seek refuge in Allah from its evil, and let him not narrate it to anyone, for it will not harm him." Then Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "And I would not narrate it to anyone but my loved ones." Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'When one of you wakes up from sleep and performs ablution (wudu) and prays two rak'ahs, then he mentions Allah's greatness and praises Him, and glorifies Him, and declares His Oneness, and seeks refuge in Allah from the evil of the world and the evil of what is in it, then the world will not be able to harm him in any way, nor will the Hereafter.'" Uthman asked: "What is that?" Abu Sa'id said: "It is the words of Allah: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the whisperings of devils, and from their being present.' (40:56) - And it is the perfection of Allah's words."
