Anger
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4746

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي، وَأَذْهِبْ غَيْظَ قَلْبِي، وَأَجِرْنِي مِنْ مُضِلاَّتِ الْفِتَنِ

"O Allah, forgive my sin, remove the rage from my heart, and protect me from the misleading trials."

Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi, wa adh-hib ghayẓa qalbi, wa ajirni min muḍillat al-fitan.

When to Read

This dua is especially potent when you feel anger rising within you. It's a prayer for inner peace and protection from the turmoil that uncontrolled anger can bring. Recite it when you notice the heat of frustration or irritation building, as a proactive step to cool your heart and seek Allah's help in maintaining composure and clarity.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Focus on the meaning as you utter the words, visualizing Allah's mercy washing over you, soothing your anger, and guiding your heart away from fitan (trials and tribulations) that lead to further misguidance. It can be recited quietly to yourself when the feeling of anger arises, or as part of your daily supplications for self-purification.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive supplication seeks Allah's forgiveness for any shortcomings, directly addresses the removal of anger from the heart, and asks for protection from trials that could lead one astray. By acknowledging the destructive potential of anger and seeking Allah's help, we aim to transform a negative emotion into an opportunity for spiritual refinement, seeking refuge in Him from internal and external disturbances. This aligns with the Quranic principle: 'And the good deed and the evil [deeds] are not alike. Repel [evil] by that [being] better...' (Surah Fussilat 41:34).

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There is nothing that Allah is asked for regarding something more beloved to Him than asking for 'afiyah (well-being). And there is nothing that Allah is asked for regarding something more beloved to Him than Paradise. And there is nothing that Allah is asked for regarding something more beloved to Him than that He is pleased with you.' Then he said: 'My Lord, I ask You for 'afiyah in this life and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my weaknesses and secure my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me. I seek refuge in Your greatness lest I be overthrown from beneath me.' (A similar narration with a slightly different wording is also found). The prayer taught here, 'Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi, wa adh-hib ghayẓa qalbi, wa ajirni min muḍillat al-fitan', is a powerful supplication for inner peace and protection, often taught in relation to seeking well-being and guidance.
