Anger
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 3079

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan.

A'udhu billahi minash-shaitanir-rajeem

When to Read

Recite this the moment you feel the heat of anger rising, especially when a misunderstanding is the cause. It's a crucial first step to ward off Satan's whispers that often fuel our rage.

How to Read

Say it clearly and with sincerity, focusing on the meaning of seeking Allah's protection. You can say it silently or aloud, depending on your situation. It's also recommended to change your physical state, as the Prophet ﷺ advised.

Virtues & Benefits

This simple yet profound supplication is the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ direct instruction for dealing with anger. By seeking refuge in Allah, we enlist His divine help to resist the destructive influence of Satan, who is the primary instigator of anger and discord. This act helps us regain composure and a clear mind, enabling us to address the misunderstanding more constructively.

Source & Authentication

Sulaiman bin Harb narrated to us from Hammad bin Zaid from Ayyub from Abu Qilabah from Abu Al-Ash'hab from Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Verily, anger is from Satan, and Satan was created from fire. Verily, fire is extinguished by water; so if one of you becomes angry, he should say: A'udhu billahi minash-shaitanir-rajeem (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan). And he should say: La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (There is no might nor power except with Allah). And he should say: Subhanallah (Glory be to Allah), Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest), La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah) - until his anger ceases.'
