Dua for Calming Anger When Faced with Persecution for Faith

Anger
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا جُبِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was created with.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jubilat 'alayh

When to Read

This dua is profoundly beneficial when you feel the heat of anger rising within you, especially when that anger stems from facing injustice or persecution due to your faith. It's a moment when your patience is tested, and your resolve might waver. Recite it when words fail you, or when you feel the urge to respond with harshness or to retaliate in a way that displeases Allah. It's a shield against letting anger consume you and lead you astray.

How to Read

This is a concise but powerful supplication. Utter it sincerely from your heart, focusing your intention on seeking Allah's protection. Visualize the anger as something negative and internalize the meaning of seeking refuge in the Most High. Repeat it as many times as needed until you feel a sense of calm and clarity return. It's often taught to be recited in the morning and evening, but its specific application here is during moments of intense emotional distress related to persecution.

Virtues & Benefits

When facing persecution for our faith, anger is a natural human response. However, unchecked anger can lead to actions that are contrary to Islamic teachings, potentially causing greater harm. This dua helps us to tap into Allah's strength to control our reactions. By seeking refuge in Him, we acknowledge that true power and control lie with the Creator. This supplication allows us to channel our feelings constructively, seeking patience and wisdom rather than succumbing to destructive rage. It reminds us that our ultimate struggle is with Allah, and He is the best protector against any evil, including the evil of our own uncontrolled anger and the circumstances that provoke it.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this dua to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) when she was angry. The full narration in Sahih Muslim states: 'The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was created with." He said this when he heard the noise of the market and the people shouting in it.' While this specific hadith refers to a general anger related to noise, the principle of seeking refuge in Allah from the 'evil of what it was created with' is universally applicable to any source of distress, including anger triggered by faith-based persecution. The underlying wisdom is to ask Allah to protect us from the negative aspects of the situation and the inherent flaws or negative tendencies that the situation might bring out in us.
