A'udhu billahi minash-shaitanir-rajeem

When to Read

This dua is a powerful first step when you feel anger rising, especially towards your spouse or family. Anger can cloud our judgment and lead to hurtful words or actions. Reciting this immediately, perhaps even before speaking, can help you pause and invite Allah's protection from the whispers of Shaytan, who often fuels anger.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity, focusing on the meaning. Take a deep breath and utter these words clearly. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that seeking refuge in Allah is a shield against evil influences. It's also recommended to change your physical state, perhaps by sitting down if you are standing, or even making wudu (ablution), as these actions can help extinguish the flames of anger.

Virtues & Benefits

This simple yet profound dua is a direct application of the Prophet's ﷺ teaching on how to manage anger. By seeking Allah's protection, we acknowledge that anger is often amplified by Shaytan's influence. This act of seeking refuge is a way to empower ourselves with divine assistance, helping to regain control, prevent regrettable speech or actions, and preserve the sanctity of our family relationships. It reminds us that our ultimate strength and guidance come from Allah alone.

Narrated Sulaiman bin Surad: I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ and two men were slandering each other, and their faces became red. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'I know a word the saying of which will make him [if he says it] calm: 'A'udhu billahi minash-shaitanir-rajeem' (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan).' So they said to him, 'This Prophet ﷺ said to you, 'Seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan, and say: 'A'udhu billahi minash-shaitanir-rajeem' ('I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan).' And the two men heard him and said to the owner of the house, 'Don't you hear what the Prophet ﷺ is saying?' They said, 'No, but the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Do you know who is the fiercest enemy of Satan and the furthest from him?' The owner of the house said, 'No.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'The Mujahid who fights in the cause of Allah. And do you know what is nearest to him on this earth?' The owner of the house said, 'No.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Calumny [Gheebah]. If he reveals it, it will be taken away from him, and if he hides it, he will be questioned about it. And do you know what is nearest to him on this earth?' The owner of the house said, 'No.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'A man who is in his house and is absent from Jihad [fighting in the Cause of Allah] and dies not as a Mujahid.'
