Dua for Calming Anger and Resisting Retaliation

Anger
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 3014

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan.

A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem

When to Read

Recite this as the very first step when you feel the heat of anger rising. Before speaking, before acting, turn to this refuge. It's particularly potent when you're provoked or wronged, as the first instinct might be to lash out.

How to Read

Say this with sincere intention, seeking Allah's protection not just from external evil but from the evil that anger can stir within you. It's about actively repelling the whispers of Shaytan that fuel fury and cloud judgment. Remember that anger itself is a spark, and Shaytan fans the flames.

Virtues & Benefits

This simple act is the cornerstone of managing anger according to the Sunnah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that seeking refuge in Allah is the primary defense against the instigation of anger. By doing so, we acknowledge that our struggle is not just against the person who wronged us, but against a greater force seeking to divide and destroy our peace and relationships. This practice prevents rash decisions, preserves dignity, and honors the Islamic emphasis on patience and self-control.

Source & Authentication

Sulayman bin Harb informed us, saying: Hammad bin Zayd informed us, from Ayyub, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed, anger comes from Satan, and Satan was created from fire. Verily, fire is extinguished by water. So, when one of you becomes angry, let him say: A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan). [Sahih al-Bukhari 3014]
