Dua for a Child Experiencing Anger Towards a Parent

Anger
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5141

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

O Allah, forgive me and my parents, and have mercy on them as they cared for me when I was young.

Allahumma-ghfir li wa liwalidayya, warhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira.

When to Read

This dua is particularly poignant when a child is feeling angry or frustrated towards their parents. It's a moment where the child needs to channel their emotions constructively, seeking Allah's help to soften their heart, understand their parents' perspective, and remember the sacrifices made for them. Reciting this can be done privately after an argument, or even during a moment of reflection when the anger begins to surface.

How to Read

Ideally, this dua should be recited with sincere intention and a humbled heart. Facing the Qibla (direction of prayer) can be a good practice, though not strictly required. Begin by acknowledging Allah's greatness and your reliance on Him. Recite the Arabic text clearly, focusing on the meaning of asking for forgiveness for yourself and your parents, and remembering their nurturing love. Even if the child cannot read Arabic, they can try to listen to a recording or have someone teach them, while focusing on the heartfelt plea.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua encapsulates several profound benefits. Firstly, it fulfills the Islamic obligation to honor parents, even when they may have displeased us. It fosters empathy by reminding the child of the parents' efforts in raising them, which can help diffuse anger and promote reconciliation. Secondly, it's a direct plea to Allah, the source of all mercy, to grant forgiveness and compassion. This act of seeking Allah's help is a way to manage anger constructively and earn immense reward, as kindness to parents is a highly emphasized act of worship in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'The pleasure of the Lord is in the anger of the father, and the displeasure of the Lord is in the displeasure of the father.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1899 - Hasan Sahih). While this hadith emphasizes pleasing parents, our dua here seeks Allah's help to navigate the difficult emotions that arise when that relationship is strained, aligning with the broader principle of honoring them.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'May he be humiliated! May he be humiliated! May he be humiliated!' It was said: 'Who, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'The one who reaches his parents, one or both of them, in old age, and he does not enter Paradise (by being dutiful to them).' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5141, also found in Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1904). The context of this hadith highlights the immense importance of honoring parents, and this dua is a tool to help a child remember that duty, even in moments of anger, thus paving the way to Paradise through dutifulness.
