اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ رِضَاكَ وَالْجَنَّةَ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَالنَّارِ

"O Allah, I ask for Your pleasure and Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from Your displeasure and the Fire."

Allahumma inni as'aluka ridak wal-jannah, wa a'udhu bika min sakhatika wan-nar

When to Read

This is a powerful dua to recite just before you fall asleep. It's a beautiful way to end your day, consciously asking Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) for what truly matters and seeking His protection from what leads to His anger.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. Imagine yourself presenting this request directly to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala). Ensure you are in a state of purity, if possible, though this is not strictly required for this particular remembrance. Turn towards the Qiblah and try to lie down on your right side, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when going to sleep.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a comprehensive request. Seeking Allah's pleasure (ridā) is the ultimate goal of a believer, as it is the highest reward. Paradise (al-jannah) is what we all strive for. Simultaneously, by seeking refuge from His displeasure (sakhat) and the Fire (an-nar), we acknowledge our need for His mercy and protection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this profound supplication as a means to focus our hearts on the eternal before entering the state of unconsciousness during sleep. It redirects our desires towards what is truly beneficial in this life and the next.

Source & Authentication

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abi Awfa: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, when he went to bed, used to say: 'O Allah, I have surrendered my face to You, and entrusted my affair to You, and turned my back towards You in hope and fear of You. There is no refuge nor safety from You but towards You. I believed in Your Book which You revealed, and in Your Messenger whom You sent.' The Prophet ﷺ continued: 'If you die that night, you will die in the state of the innate nature (fitrah). So let these be the last words you say.' The narrator said: 'So I said them and the following night I came to the Prophet ﷺ and he said: 'O 'Abdullah, how did you wake up?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, he is good.' He said: 'Repeat them.' So I said them, and the Prophet ﷺ taught them to me in order that I might tell them to the people: 'Allahumma inni as-aluka ridak wal-jannah, wa a'udhu bika min sakhatika wan-nar.' (O Allah, I ask for Your pleasure and Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from Your displeasure and the Fire.)
