Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا وَبِحَمْدِكَ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي.

Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and praise be to You. O Allah, forgive me.

Subhanakallahumma Rabbana wa bihamdik, Allahummaghfir li.

When to Read

This dua is recited before sleeping. While there isn't a specific dua *only* for seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, the general practice of reciting the Prophet's ﷺ own supplications before sleep, and the profound dua he ﷺ taught for waking up, carry immense blessings. A significant part of seeking good dreams, especially of the Prophet ﷺ, is through ensuring righteous actions during the day and making sincere supplications.

How to Read

This dua is a part of the general supplications the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say before sleeping. After reciting the Quranic verses like Ayat al-Kursi and the final two surahs (Al-Falaq and An-Nas), and making other duas for protection and well-being, one would conclude with this remembrance of Allah. It's essential to be in a state of purity (wudu) if possible, and to face the Qiblah while lying down on your right side. Recite with sincerity and a focused heart, intending to seek Allah's pleasure and the blessings associated with the Sunnah.

Virtues & Benefits

The ultimate benefit of seeing the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in a dream is immense spiritual joy and a deep connection to his Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ himself said: "Whoever sees me in a dream has indeed seen me, for Satan does not appear in my form." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6997). This means any vision of him ﷺ is truthful. The specific dua mentioned above, 'Subhanakallahumma Rabbana wa bihamdik, Allahummaghfir li,' is what the Prophet ﷺ would say upon waking. While not directly for *seeing* him in a dream, it is part of the sleep-wake cycle associated with his Sunnah, bringing blessings and closeness to him ﷺ by following his practices. Reciting duas and seeking Allah's help before sleep is a way to invite righteous dreams and protection from nightmares.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say when he wanted to sleep: 'Allahumma bismika ahya wa amut' (O Allah, with Your name I live and die). And when he woke up, he used to say: 'Alhamdu li-llahil-ladhi ahya-na ba'da ma amatana wa ilaihil-nusur' (All the praises are for Allah Who gave us life after bringing us death and to Him is the return). And he used to say: 'Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaik.' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and all praise is due to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.). And the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'No one among you should say, 'O Allah, forgive me if You wish; O Allah, bestow mercy on me if You wish'; rather he should call upon Allah with resolution, for there is no one to compel Him.' (Note: The specific dua 'Subhanakallahumma Rabbana wa bihamdik, Allahummaghfir li' is a variation mentioned in different narrations, often part of the awakening dua, highlighting repentance and glorification. The essence is remembrance and seeking forgiveness. The context of seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a dream is established by the hadith: 'Whoever sees me in a dream has indeed seen me, for Satan does not appear in my form.' - Sahih al-Bukhari 6997)
