Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 735

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited in the morning, but its essence of seeking Allah's blessings for knowledge, sustenance, and acceptance of deeds can be made at any time, including before sleeping, to entrust one's family and oneself to Allah's care. When reciting it before sleep, focus on the intention of seeking Allah's protection and provision for your family throughout the night and into the coming day.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and focus. Raise your hands slightly if comfortable, as is the practice during supplication. Visualize Allah's protection enveloping your sleeping family. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, though sincerity of heart is paramount. It's also beneficial to recite Ayatul Kursi (Quran 2:255) and the last three Surahs of the Quran (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) before sleeping, as these have specific virtues for protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his wife Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) when she asked him what to say in the morning, encompasses seeking the best for oneself and one's family. By asking for beneficial knowledge, we seek to understand our deen and the world around us better. Asking for good provision ensures sustenance is earned through lawful means and is blessed. The request for accepted deeds means our worship and good actions are acknowledged and rewarded by Allah. When made with the intention of protecting family, it's a comprehensive entrustment of their well-being to the Most Merciful, seeking His safeguarding against all harm and ensuring their prosperity in this life and the next.
