O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all Your displeasure.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.
When to Read
This powerful dua is recommended to be recited before going to sleep. As we prepare to rest, a time when we are perhaps more vulnerable, it's a perfect opportunity to reflect on our lives and seek Allah's protection from the loss of His immense favors. Thinking about the 'heaviness of the scales' as mentioned in other related ahadith, this dua reminds us of our accountability and the need for Allah's mercy throughout the night and beyond.
How to Read
Recite this dua sincerely, with a humble heart, and firm conviction. Raise your hands as you would during supplication, though some scholars mention that for these specific protection duas before sleep, it may not be necessary. The key is the earnestness and mindfulness of what you are asking for: refuge with Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) from things that could lead to His displeasure.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication encompasses seeking refuge in Allah from the loss of His gifts, the reversal of good health, unexpected punishment, and anything that would incur His anger. It’s a comprehensive plea for divine protection, especially potent when uttered before sleep. By asking for refuge from these severe outcomes, we acknowledge our dependence on Allah and His power to safeguard us from all harm, both seen and unseen. This act of seeking refuge is a manifestation of Tawakkul (trust in Allah), acknowledging that true safety and well-being are solely in His hands.
