أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when you are about to sleep, especially when you are away from your home and familiar surroundings. It's a proactive step to invoke Allah's protection over your temporary abode and any belongings you may have with you.

How to Read

Recite this dua before you settle down to sleep. Focus your heart on seeking Allah's refuge and trust that He is the ultimate protector. Some scholars suggest repeating it three times for added emphasis, as often done with other protective duas.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua is a profound way to rely on Allah (SWT) for safety. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this supplication as a shield against all forms of evil that Allah has created. When you are away from home, the sense of vulnerability can be heightened, making this dua particularly comforting and effective in seeking divine guardianship over your person, your temporary dwelling, and your possessions.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever says this invocation at night three times, Allah will appoint for him two thousand angels to protect him from every evil and Satan will not be able to harm him until he wakes up.' The narrator of the Hadith said: 'And we felt cold and heavy on the night, and we said: 'O Allah's Messenger! What about us? We felt cold and heavy on the night?' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah will suffice you for both.' This version is narrated by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi, who graded it Sahih. However, the version 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' is found in Sahih Muslim.
