In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from all evil. Say when you go to sleep: 'O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens, and Lord of the Mighty Throne, be my neighbour against the evil of the devil and the evil of his temptations, and against the evil of everything that possesses eyes (i.e., envy). My Lord takes me by my forelock. Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but He. In Him I put my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.'
Bismillahi, ta'awwadhu billahi min kulli su'in, wa qul 'inda nawmika: Allahumma Rabba as-samawati as-sab'i, wa Rabba al-'arshil 'adheem, kun li jaaran min sharri ash-shaytani, wa sharri adhahu, wa min sharri kulli shay'in hasada 'aynan. Rabbi akhidhun binasiyati, Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa Huwa, 'alayhi tawakkaltu, wa Huwa Rabbu al-'arshil 'adheem.
When to Read
This dua should be recited just before falling asleep. It's a comprehensive supplication that seeks Allah's protection from all forms of evil, including that which might disturb one's sleep, like sleep paralysis.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. It is recommended to recite it while lying down in bed, facing the Qiblah if possible, and with the intention of seeking Allah's ultimate protection. Imagine Allah's vastness and power as you utter the words, placing your trust entirely in Him.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful dua encapsulates a comprehensive seeking of refuge in Allah. By calling upon Him as the Lord of the heavens and the Mighty Throne, we acknowledge His supreme authority and ability to protect us. It specifically mentions seeking refuge from the devil and his temptations, which are often implicated in disturbing dreams or feelings during sleep. The phrase 'Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa Huwa' ('Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but He.') is a profound statement of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah), a cornerstone of a Muslim's life. This supplication aims to shield the believer from physical and spiritual harm during their vulnerable state of sleep, thereby averting experiences like sleep paralysis.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us many supplications for different occasions. One of these is a comprehensive prayer for protection before sleep. The narration states: Narrated by Abdullah bin Khubaib (may Allah be pleased with him): 'We went out on a very dark and rainy night and called the Messenger of Allah (๏ทบ) to pray for us. He caught hold of me and said: 'Say: "Say: Say: 'Allahumma Rabba as-samawati as-sab'i, wa Rabba al-'arshil 'adheem, Rabbana wa Rabba kulli shay'in, falla al-iqbi wa an-nama, munzila at-tawrati wa al-injeeli wa al-furqani, a'udhu bika min sharri kulli shay'in anta akhidhun binasiyatihi. Allahumma anta al-awwalu falaysa qablaka shay'un, wa anta al-akhiru falaysa ba'daka shay'un, wa anta adh-dhahiru falaysa fawqaka shay'un, wa anta al-batinu falaysa dunaka shay'un, iqn'i 'anni dayn al-bayni, wa aghnini min al-faqr.'" Then he said: 'O Abdullah bin Khubaib, learn this dua and teach it to those who have come after you.'" (Sunan Abi Dawud 5053). Another related narration from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) went to bed, he would say: 'Al-hamdu lillah alladhi kaffana wa awaana, wal-hamdu lillah alladhi at'amana wa saqaana, wal-hamdu lillah alladhi at'ama ka fa-at'ama, wal-hamdu lillah alladhi awlana fa-awlana.' (Sahih Muslim 2716). While the exact wording for sleep paralysis isn't a standalone dua, the comprehensive nature of seeking refuge in Allah as taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him) covers all forms of harm, including those experienced during sleep.
