Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5073

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and in the Lord of the Magnificent Throne, and in the Lord of the seven heavens and the seven earths, and in all that is within them and all that is upon them. You are the First of everything, there is nothing before You. You are the Last of everything, there is nothing after You. You are the Manifest, there is nothing above You. You are the Hidden, there is nothing closer than You. Relieve me of my debt and enrich me from poverty.

Bismillahi, a'udhu bi Rabbis-samawati wal-ard, wa bi Rabbil-'arshil-'adheem, wa bi Rabbis-samawatisseb'i wal-aradeenisseb'i, wa bima fee hinna wa ma 'alayhinna, Anta Awwalu kulli shay', laysa qablaka shay', wa Anta Aakhiru kulli shay', laysa ba'daka shay', wa Anta Adh-dhahiru laysa fawqaka shay', wa Anta Al-batinu laysa doonaka shay', aqdi 'anni ddayna wa aghnini minal-faqr.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is recommended to be recited before sleeping. While it specifically asks for relief from debt and poverty, its comprehensive nature, seeking refuge in Allah's lordship over all creation, offers a profound protection against all forms of harm, including the distressing experience of sleep paralysis. Reciting it consistently before slumber helps fortify one's spiritual and mental state, inviting Allah's immediate presence and safeguard.

How to Read

Begin by sincerely intending to seek Allah's protection. Recite the dua with full conviction, visualizing Allah's immense power and dominion over all things. Utter each word clearly and with a humble heart, recognizing that true peace and security come only from Him. It is best recited when lying down to sleep, after performing Wudu (ablution) if possible, and after reciting other recommended sleep duas like Ayatul Kursi and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to a companion facing debt, is a comprehensive shield. By invoking Allah as the Lord of the entire creation – heavens, earth, and the Throne – we acknowledge His ultimate power and sovereignty. This grants immense spiritual strength, repelling any anxieties or disturbances that might affect us during sleep. Seeking refuge in His absolute presence (Adh-dhahir and Al-batin) calms the heart and mind, preventing the fear and helplessness often associated with sleep paralysis. While the companion's specific request was for debt relief, the encompassing nature of the protection sought extends to all forms of distress, including spiritual and psychological afflictions that can manifest during sleep.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this dua to a man from his companions who was burdened with debt. The companion said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am worried about my debt.' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I seek refuge in Your perfect words from the evil of what You have created.' Then he taught him this more comprehensive dua: 'Bismillahi, a'udhu bi Rabbis-samawati wal-ard, wa bi Rabbil-'arshil-'adheem, wa bi Rabbis-samawatisseb'i wal-aradeenisseb'i, wa bima fee hinna wa ma 'alayhinna, Anta Awwalu kulli shay', laysa qablaka shay', wa Anta Aakhiru kulli shay', laysa ba'daka shay', wa Anta Adh-dhahiru laysa fawqaka shay', wa Anta Al-batinu laysa doonaka shay', aqdi 'anni ddayna wa aghnini minal-faqr.' (In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and in the Lord of the Magnificent Throne, and in the Lord of the seven heavens and the seven earths, and in all that is within them and all that is upon them. You are the First of everything, there is nothing before You. You are the Last of everything, there is nothing after You. You are the Manifest, there is nothing above You. You are the Hidden, there is nothing closer than You. Relieve me of my debt and enrich me from poverty.) The companion did this, and Allah removed his debt and sufficed him from poverty.
