Allahumma 'allimni minal-hikmati ma yanfa'uni, wa zidni 'ilman
When to Read
This dua is particularly potent when recited before sleeping, especially if you are seeking clarity on a matter, wish to deepen your understanding of deen, or hope for guidance through dreams. It's a beautiful way to conclude your day, turning your mind towards seeking beneficial knowledge from the Almighty.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart before you go to sleep. It is advisable to be in a state of purity (wudu) if possible, and to face the Qiblah as a sign of respect. Reflect on what knowledge you seek and ask Allah to grant you understanding that is truly beneficial in this life and the next.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking beneficial knowledge is a highly encouraged act in Islam, carrying immense reward. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, 'Whoever takes a path to seek knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to Paradise' (Sahih Muslim 2699). This dua specifically asks for *hikmah* (wisdom), which is the correct application of knowledge, and for an increase in *'ilman* (knowledge). By asking for this before sleep, we are essentially entrusting our desire for learning to Allah and hoping He grants us insights, perhaps even through visions or clear understanding upon waking.
Source & Authentication
Narrated Ibn Abbas: I asked Allah's Messenger ﷺ, 'Which of the two periods of time is better, praying in them or eating in them?' He said: 'The time between the two calls (i.e. Adhan and Iqamah) and the time between the evening prayer and the night prayer.' Another narration: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There are two blessings which many people waste: health and free time.' (Tirmidhi). While this specific dua isn't directly linked to the hadith about blessings wasted, the act of seeking beneficial knowledge is paramount. The Prophet ﷺ also supplicated, 'O Allah, teach me benefit, and benefit me from what You have taught me, and increase me in knowledge.' (Ibn Majah 3833).
