Sleep Duas
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2713

O Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, our Lord and Lord of everything, Cleaver of the seed and the date stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran. I seek refuge in You from the evil of all things You seize by their forelocks. O Allah, You are the First, so there is nothing before You; You are the Last, so there is nothing after You; You are the Apparent, so there is nothing above You; You are the Hidden, so there is nothing closer than You. Settle our debts for us and enrich us from poverty.

Allahumma Rabba as-samawati wa Rabba al-ard, Rabbana wa Rabba kulli shay', faliq al-habbi wa an-nawa, wa munzil at-Tawrati wal-Injili wal-Furqan, a'udhu bika min sharri kulli shay'in anta akhidhun bi-nasiyatih. Allahumma Anta al-Awwalu falaysa qablaka shay', wa Anta al-Akhiru falaysa ba'daka shay', wa Anta adh-Dhahiru falaysa fawqaka shay', wa Anta al-Batinu falaysa duna ka shay', iqdi 'anna daynana wa aghnina min al-faqr.

When to Read

This profound supplication is best recited just before you lie down to sleep. It's a beautiful way to entrust yourself, your well-being, and even your physical restoration during the night to Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence. Imagine Allah's power encompassing all of creation as you call upon Him. While no specific physical posture is mandated, it's often recited while lying on your right side, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when going to sleep. Reflect on the words, especially the acknowledgment of Allah's absolute control and the request for relief from debt and poverty, which can be seen as forms of hardship affecting one's well-being.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection and seeks divine assistance. By seeking refuge in Allah from the evil of all things, we are asking for His shield against any harm that might befall us, seen or unseen, during our sleep. The acknowledgment of Allah's attributes as the First, Last, Apparent, and Hidden reinforces our belief in His omnipotence and presence. The specific request to settle debts and remove poverty addresses potential worries and hardships that can affect our peace of mind and physical health, even in sleep. It's a holistic plea for well-being, both spiritual and material, as we rest.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say when he went to bed:
