Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 1934

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to test people, then take me to Yourself without putting them to trial. And I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l al-khayrat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfir li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fitnata qawmin fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

While its primary focus is on seeking Allah's pleasure and guidance in this life, the petition 'And when You intend to test people, then take me to Yourself without putting them to trial' implicitly includes seeking a peaceful passing and a good end, which ultimately leads to ease in the hereafter and passage into Jannah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and contemplation. Imagine yourself asking these earnest requests from Allah Almighty before you drift off to sleep. Ensure you pronounce the Arabic words clearly.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking the ability to do righteous deeds, to shun wrongdoing, and to have compassion for the less fortunate – all actions that are pleasing to Allah and lead to His pleasure. The specific mention of being taken by Allah before falling into trials is a profound request for a good end, safeguarding one's faith at the time of death. Ultimately, cultivating Allah's love and the love for actions that bring one closer to Him is the surest path to His mercy and, by extension, to Jannah.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught me the Tashahhud with my two hands, and he taught me the Tashahhud for prayer. And one night, I asked him: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I can say.' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I ask You for the guidance, righteousness, chastity, and self-sufficiency.' And he taught me a dua for before sleeping: 'O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to test people, then take me to Yourself without putting them to trial. And I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.' So I memorized these words.
