Dua for Repentance and the Healing of a Wounded Conscience

Repentance & Tawbah
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1543

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your judgment upon me is effective. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept exclusively unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness, and the banisher of my worries. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and decrepitude, from stinginess and hardness of heart, from heedlessness and malice, from poverty and humiliation, and from disgrace. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, my sight, my tongue, my heart, and my fluid.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabiika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-harami, wal-bukhli wal-qaswati, wal-ghaflati wal-ghillati, wal-'ailati wadh-dhillati, wal-hawani, wa a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i wa basari wa lisani wa qalbi wa maniyyi.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is a powerful supplication to make whenever you feel the weight of your sins pressing down, or when your conscience is troubled. It's particularly fitting during times of sincere repentance (tawbah), after performing acts of worship like salah or du'a, or during the blessed nights like those in Ramadan. Reciting it after obligatory prayers is also a recommended practice.

How to Read

To make this dua with the most sincerity and effect: 1. Begin with sincere repentance, acknowledging your shortcomings before Allah. 2. Raise your hands in supplication, a gesture of reliance on Allah. 3. Recite with a clear and present heart, reflecting on the meaning of each phrase. 4. Be firm in your belief that Allah is the only One who can grant relief and healing. 5. Remain hopeful and patient, as the response to du'a is in Allah's perfect timing and wisdom.

Virtues & Benefits

This du'a addresses two critical spiritual needs: healing a wounded conscience and seeking Allah's refuge from various evils. * **Healing the Conscience:** By asking Allah to make the Qur'an the 'springtime of the heart,' it signifies seeking spiritual rejuvenation and cleansing through Allah's guidance. This helps to alleviate the guilt and distress that comes from straying. * **Seeking Comprehensive Refuge:** The dua enumerates specific weaknesses and negative traits (helplessness, laziness, cowardice, etc.) and evil influences (from senses and heart). Seeking refuge from these through Allah highlights our dependence on Him for protection and inner strength, essential for a sound conscience. * **Acknowledging Allah's Sovereignty:** Starting by recognizing Allah's complete control ('My forelock is in Your hand') fosters humility and strengthens faith, which are vital for effective repentance.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: "O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your judgment upon me is effective. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept exclusively unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness, and the banisher of my worry. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and decrepitude, from stinginess and hardness of heart, from heedlessness and malice, from poverty and humiliation, and from disgrace. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, my sight, my tongue, my heart, and my fluid." (Sahih Muslim 2708, but the wording here is closer to Sunan Abi Dawud 1543 which classifies it as Hasan. The core meaning and essence are preserved).
