Dua for Repentance and the Courage to Break Free from Addiction

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithMusnad Ahmad 3701

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever established. Your justice over me is certain. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any one of Your creation, or kept hidden for Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen that is with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my grief, and the reliever of my distress.

Allahumma inni 'abdak, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitâbik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm al-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to a man who came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have been afflicted by a tribulation and my enemies have taken me prisoner.' He (the Prophet ﷺ) told him: 'Shall I not teach you words which, if you say them, Allah will grant you relief?': Allahumma inni 'abdak, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitâbik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm al-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi. (O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever established. Your justice over me is certain. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any one of Your creation, or kept hidden for Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen that is with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my grief, and the reliever of my distress). The man said: 'I recited them, and Allah the Almighty removed my affliction and granted me relief.' — Reported by Ahmad and others, authenticated by Al-Albani.
