Dua for the Ill Person Who is Fasting: Seeking Healing and Ease

Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5675

O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the suffering and heal him, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, [a healing that leaves] no illness behind.

Allahumma Rabb-an-nas, adh-hib-il-ba's, ishfi Anta-sh-Shafi, la shifaa'a illa shifaa'uka, shifaa'an la yughadiru saqaman.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when recited for an ill person who is also observing the fast during Ramadan or any other voluntary fast. It can be recited at any time, but especially during the blessed times of the month, such as the last ten nights, or at the time of iftar when duas are readily accepted.

How to Read

Place your hand on the area of pain or discomfort of the ill person. Recite this dua with sincerity, conviction, and a humble heart, focusing on Allah's power to heal. It is best recited by a healthy person for the ill, but the ill person can also recite it for themselves, making sincere supplication. Ensure the sick person understands the importance of not straining themselves while fasting if their illness is severe, and to break their fast if it is necessary for their health.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, is a powerful supplication for healing. It acknowledges Allah as the sole source of cure and recognizes that true recovery comes only from Him. For someone fasting, the added act of patience and seeking Allah's help during their illness amplifies the potential for acceptance, as a fasting person's supplication is considered more likely to be answered.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite over the sick: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، أَذْهِبِ البَأْسَ، اشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا > > **Translation:** O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the suffering and heal him, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, [a healing that leaves] no illness behind. So he recited it several times, and when he recovered, he said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for me, I felt he was a broker for death.'
