Seeking Allah's Protection: A Powerful Dua Against the Evil Eye and Envy

Quranic Duas
QuranQuran 113:1-5

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: 'I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn, from the evil of all that He has created, and from the evil of the darkening night as it falls, and from the evil of those who practice sorcery when they tie knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies.'

Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem. Qul a'udhu bi Rabbil-falaq, min sharri ma khalaq, wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab, wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-'uqad, wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad.

When to Read

These Surahs, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, are recommended to be recited daily for general protection. Specifically, when you feel a sense of unease, suspect you have been affected by the evil eye or envy, or simply as a regular part of your morning and evening remembrance (Adhkar). Reciting them after every prayer is also a beautiful Sunnah.

How to Read

Recite these verses with sincerity and conviction, understanding their meaning. Blow gently with a little saliva after reciting them onto your hands and wipe over your body. This practice was shown to be done by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, though it is not strictly required for reciting Quranic verses.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that these two Surahs are the best means of seeking refuge. It is reported by Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to recite Al-Mu'awwidhat (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) at the end of every prayer.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 4057). It is through Allah's perfect words that we find true protection from all His creation, including the unseen evils and the malice of envious hearts.

Uqbah ibn Amir reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Have you not seen verses that were revealed tonight, the like of which has never been seen? They are [the last] two Surahs of the Quran: Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn.' (113) and Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.' (114).' — Sahih Muslim 814
